20. The Knights of Pythias lodge at Sumter, S. has established a scholarship at Clemson College. This is indeed a knightly act well in keeping with the brotherly principles and charitable teachings of a noble order. These worthy sous of Sumter deserve and will receive the thanks of all who appreciate nobility of purpose.

l)irt has been broken preparatory to the erection of the new chemical laboratory. Col. D. K. Norris was here this week looking after the interests of the new textile building.

He was accompanied by his daughters, Miss Bessie and Miss Lillian. Last evening the home of Dr. and Mrs. G. E.

Nesom was the scene of a most enjoyable reception given in honor of Miss Ward of Mississippi, who has beeu the guest of Mrs. Nesom for a week or two. Mrs. som is a charming hostess, as is also the doctor a host, receiving in the manner that long ago made southern hospitality famous. Croki- nole and caroms were indulged in by those who wished.

Never was formality more delightfully informal. The young ladies in evening attire and the younf men in full dress made a picture that carried one's mind back to the days "When Knighthood was in the daintily decorated diningroom dainty dishes were deftly served. Besides the young ladies on the campus. Miss Bessie Xorris of Hickory Flat, Misses Conway and Jennie Simpson of Pendleton. Miss Bradford of Lexington and Miss Clover of Beech Island were present.

Miss Ward has made many warm friends here who are sorry her visit ends so soon. Mrs. Albert Barnes, who spent the summer in New York visiting relatives and sightseeing with Prof. Barnes, after a week's stay in Greenville, has returned and is now at home at the Clemson Club Hotel. Misses Mary and Anna Hardin, after a stay of several months in Virginia their native State, have returned to Clemson.

They are social favorites here and are warmly welcomed back. Lieut. Gov. Scarborough spent two days here this week. He brought his son to college and was delighted with Clemson.

The college chapel was crowded on last Sunday. This the first service of the college year wasnducted by the Rev. B. M. Anderson, the newly appointed pastor of the Episcopal church here.

Mr. Anderson is a graceful speaker and a pood preacher, his sermons being short, strong and to the text. Prof. J. V.

Lewis has been elected suerintenderit of the Sunday school for another term. He is a most earnest and successful worker and the school will continue to prosper under his direction. His' worthy assistants arc: Prof. "IV. S.

Morrison, assistants superintendent; Mr. K. M. Matthews, secretary and treasurer; Mr. B.

H. Barre, assistant secretary and treasurer. President Hartzog and Prof. Morrison made short talks at the organization. The attendance at the Y.

M. C. A. meeting Sunday night was.very large. Every effort is made to throw religious influences around the young men.

W. Copeland has moved Into its new building, which is one of the handsomest in this section of the State. The postoflire building will be ready for occupany at an early date. This will be finished up with granite front and modern equipments. A plan is on foot for securing water works and electric lights for our little city.

Certainly the time has come when we need them, and it is confidently expected that in a sl'ort while, it will lie realitv. The yarn mill being built by Jlr. J. K. Illiilock at Uoldville, five miles frcm Clinton, is rapidly going lip.

Mr. Blnlock owns one of the two Inrii's farms in the State, nnd his cotton crop alone would keep a small mill btisv. Four hundred and forty-seven dollars has been raised for the Texas sutrerers by the citizens here, and it has been suggested that the city council donate fifty dollars so that the amount can be made five, hundred dollars in all. The money will be sent to the governor, to be used where most needed. Miss Georgia Norris left yesterday for her home in after spending several weeks with her sister, Mrs. Foster Fant. Miss Nina Burriss leaves today for Gaffney, where she will enter Cooper-Limestone College.

Mrs. W. White was called to Pickens yesterday by the death of her father. Capt. J.

L. Thornley. C. F. Young leaves today for Okolomn, where he will buy cotton this winter.

Mrs. J. B. Patrick, Mrs. Pauline Curganus and Miss Louise Patrick left this morning for Marion, Ala.

They went by Greenville and will spend tonight there. Mrs. Rosa Pacot left this morning for her home in Greenville. Mrs. S.

M. Johnson has gone to Newlnrry county to visit her parents. Stephen Prevost returned to Columbia this morning. Ray Dendy of Walhnlla is in town today on his way to Charlotte. SADNESS IN LAURENS.

Laurens, Sep. 20. The people of Laurens are again called to mourn the death of loved ones. Two very bright and attractive young women, born and reared in our community, have been snatched away by death. Mrs.

Dr. Doyle, of Seneca, nee Miss Emma C. Jones, of Laurens, daughter of Mr. W. W.

Jones, died at her home at Seneca last night. Miss Beatrice Yeargin, recently a teacher in the Laurens graded schools, died yesterday morning and was buried in the Laurens cemetery on yesterdny afternoon, amid a great concourse of citizens. HEALTH OF GEORGETOWN. In reference to the report printed in the Florence Times of a serious epidemic of hemorrhagic fever in Georgetown, the Georgetown Times says, among other things: "We do not believe there has been a dozen cases of hemorrhagic fever here this summer, and less than half a dozen deaths resulting from it. Inquiry among the doctors develops the fact that there is not a single case of hemorrhagic fever in Georgetown at present, and in fact very little sickness of uny description." LIFE INSURANCE IN GALVESTON.

Savannnh News. Practically all the life insurance held in Galveston at the time of the storm was carried in thirty-three companies, one-half of the ttital being in three companies of New York. The aggregate of the life insurance losses, it is estimated, will approximate $10,000,000.
