Laughter Lawrence Blair SPARTANBURG Funeral services for Lawrence Blair, who died Monday in Dublin, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at J. F. Floyd Mortuary by Rev. Talmadge Loftis.

Burial will be in Browns Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Ada Jones ANDERSON services for Mrs. Ada Jones, Mechere', who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Baptist Church by Rev.

E. A. Hood and the Rev. Payne. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney.

M. D. Gardner SPARTANBURG Max Dean (Buck) Gardner, 38, of 500 Front died at his home Tuesday night at 8 p.m. after a long illness. He was a native of Anderson County, a son of the late William B.

and Neva Strickland Gardner. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and was a painter. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Wilson Gardner; a daughCheryl Gardner of the home; three brothers, Lloyd, Gardner, all of Spartanburg; and a foster brother, Max Ray Pettit of Spartanburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m.

Thursday at J. F. Floyd Mortuary by Rev. Jesse Johnson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Conwell ANDERSON Mrs. Alma Collins Conwell, 53, of Beachwood Avenue, died at a local hospital early Wednesday morning after two months of illness. She was a daughter, of the late Thomas Olive Cox Collins. She was a native of Toccoa, but had lived most of her life in Anderson County.

Surviving are her husband, Ralph Conwell sons, Ralph Gordon Conwell Jr. and Thomas Lloyd Conwell, both of Anderson; a daughter, Miss Thelma Jean Conwell of the home; a brother, Henry Lloyd Collins of Anderson. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home by Rev. D.

M. Cobb. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Thomas. Leo and J.

B. Donald, Lucius Mayfield, Oscar Hardman and James Harrison. The body is at the mortuary. Mrs. G.

W. Bolding GREER Mrs. Henrietta Nalley Bolding, 55, of 104 W. Bearden died today at 9 a.m. at her home, following two years of declining health and a serious illness of seven months.

She was a native of Easley but had made her home in Greer for many years. She was a daughter of the late Corrie Christopher and J. Walter Nalley. Her husband, George W. Bolding, died in 1947.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church at Duncan. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Joe R. Babb of the home, Mrs. Marguerite Blanton of Spartanburg: 4 sons, George W.

Bolding Jr. of Greer, Jack A. Bolding of U. S. Navy, Hampton, Robert 0.

Bolding of U. S. Army, Columbia, and Billy T. Bolding of Spartanburg: 2 sisters, Mrs. Marie Bridges of Niagara Falls, N.

and Mrs. Eva Fincher of Atlanta, 2 brothers, Claude Nalley of Atlanta, Ga. and J. C. Nalley of Easley; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Holtzclaw Funeral Home by Rev. A. Howard Wilson and Rev. W.

PICKENS Funeral services for Archie Cheswell Putnam, 87, of 301 Cedar Rock who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home in Easley by Rev. Harry R. Mays and Rev. Raymond Holroyd.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley. The body is at the mortuary. The family is at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lila Potts of 202 S. Fifth Easley.

Thornton, ANDERSON-Mrs. Helen Irene Turner Thornton, 29, of 403 Masters died at a Charleston hospital at a.m. Wednesday after eight years of declining health. She was a daughter of Almon E. and Line Hall Turner of Starr, a native of Greenville County.

She had lived most of her life in Anderson. Surviving in addition to her parents are her, husband, Gary P. Thornton Anderson; a brother, Alvin B. Turner of Anderson; and two, sisters, Mrs. Gladys Chastain Anderson and Mrs.

Doris Ann Fowler of Starr. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home by Rev. Sanford Jones. Burial will be in Old Silver Brook Cemetery.

The body is at the mortuary and the family is at the home of a sister, Mrs. Gladys Chastain at 311 H. St. Mrs. H.

R. Reeves PICKENS Mrs. Maggie Powell Reeves, 66, of 300 Pumpkintown died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at a local hospital after two years of declining health and a sudden illness. She was a lifelong resident of Pickens County, a daughter of the late Robert and Syvania Hendrix Powell.

She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Homer R. Reeves; 3 daughters, Mrs. Jack Perrow of Washington, D. Miss Allene Reeves of Greenville and Mrs.

Jerry Kennedy of Salisbury, N. 6 sons, Arvel Reeves of Pickens, Arlos Reeves of Washington, Arnold Reeves of Pickens, Alvin Reeves of Jacksonville, Alton Reeves of Pickens and A. J. Reeves of Wana, 2 sisters, Mrs. Pearl Chapman of Liberty and Mrs.

Arie Patterson of Florida: 15 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Clayton Dillard Funeral Home. Andrew Massengale GREER Andrew Massengale, 50, of 318 Pennsylvania died suddenly Wednesday morning at his home. He was a native of the Cashville community, a son of 0. W.

Massengale and the late Mrs. Jamie Barnett Massengale. He lived in Greer for the past 30 years and was a steel worker for Wilhoyt Construction Co. Surviving addition to his father are his wife, Mrs. Eva Johnson Massengale; three sons, Thomas Massengale of Duncan, Larry and Ronnie Massengale of Rt.

1, Woodruff; five brothers, George Massengale of Rt. 6, Greer, Horace Massengale of Rt. 1, Greer, Edgar Massengale of Rock Hill, Edwin and Leroy Massengale, both of Greer: two sisters, Mrs. Marie Cooper of Greer and Mrs. Mary Waters of Rt.

C. Perry Leonard Cox, 73, of Rutherfordton, N. died at noon Tuesday after several years of declining health. He was a native of the Fairview community near Greer, S. and was a son of the late John and Minerva Johnson Cox.

He was a member of Oak Springs Baptist Church and had served as Sunday School superintendent. He had lived in North Carolina for the past 32 years. His wife was the late Mrs. Janie Morrow Cox. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs.

Bob Owensby of Rutherfordton, N. and Mrs. William Buchynski of New York; two sons, Edward Cox of Kings Mountain, N. and Glenn of Jacksonville, five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Brooks, Mrs.

Birdie Vaughn. Mrs. Cora Pittman, Mrs. Agnes Grant, all of Greenville, and Mrs. Ressie Dempsey of Lyman, S.

two brothers, D. D. Cox of Greenville, S. and J. S.

Simpson ANDERSON Mrs. Nannie Attaway Simpson, 53, of Iva, died at a local hospital at 5:35 a.m. Wednesday after two days of illness. She was a daughter of the late Marvin and Liza Harbin Attaway. She was a member of Iva ARP Church.

Surviving her husband, David M. Simpson; her stepmother, Mrs. Inez Attaway of Piedmont; two sons, David and Robert Allen Simpson, both of Iva; two daughters, Mrs. Juanita Fleming and Mrs. Margaret McMullan, both of Iva; three sisters, Mrs.

Tom Loftis of Houston, Mrs. Ethel Wyatt of Easley and Mrs. Blanche Locklair of Summerville; two half-sisters, Mrs. Bobby Wilson and Miss Jane Attaway, both of Piedmont; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m.

Knight Marcengill WESTMINSTER-Knight (Bub) Marcengill, 24, of Simpson Street Extension, died at his home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

He was a lifelong resident of Oconee County, a son of Walter Newton Bub and Annie Roache Marcengill. He was employed by Oconee Mills at Westminster. He was a member of Chauga Baptist Church and the South Carolina National Guard of Seneca. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Larry Marcengill of the home and Bobby McGill with the U. S.

Navy in Trenton, N. three sisters, Miss Susan Marcengill of the home, Mrs. Helen Honea of Westminster and Mrs. Nova James of Westminster; and his grandmother, Mrs. Lela Roache of Anderson.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Chauga Baptist Church by Rev. C. E. Entrekin, Rev.

The body is at the home. Sandifer Funeral Home is in charge. John B. Moore LIBERTY John Benjamin (Ben) Moore, 76, of Rt. 1, Liberty died at a Greenville hospital at 5:30 a.

m. Wednesday after a year of declining health and seven weeks of illness. He was a native of Pickens County and had spent most of his life in and near Liberty. He was a son of the late John L. and Susan Lee Moore.

He had owned and operated a grocery store for the past 12 years in the Flat Rock community. He was a Baptist. His wife, Mrs. Ida Redmond Moore, died in 1938. Surviving are 5 sons, John Lewis Moore of Liberty, Clarence Moore and Henry Benjamin Moore, both of Greenville, Wade Hampton Moore and Arthur Doyle Moore, both of Los Angeles, 4 daughters, Mrs.

Cleo Bridges of Piedmont, Mrs. Lillie Hicks and Mrs. Agnes Jordan of Atlanta, and Mrs. Ollie Bell Allen of Los Angeles, 2 brothers, Jim and Charlie Moore, both of Liberty; a sister, Mrs. Ada Holden of Liberty; 18 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday at Flat Rock Baptist Church by Rev. Robert S. Wheeler and Rev.

Hezekiah Shelton Hezekiah Shelton, 57, of 9 E. Center City View, died from a sudden attack yesterday at 3:50 a.m. He had been in declining health for some time. A son of the late Ben and Mary Jane Landreth Shelton, he was a native of Pickens County. In 1903 he came to Greenville and lived with his brother, T.

A. Shelton, in City View. Mr. Shelton was employed Monaghan Mill. He was a member of Monaghan Methodist Church.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Mamie S. Sweet of Greenville: two brothers, T. A. and E.

C. Shelton of Greenville: one halfbrother, Walter Landreth of Thomasville, and one nephew. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home by Rev. H.

M. McIntyre and Rev. R. C. Griffith.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Don Newton, Kenneth Pittman, Bever Bowers, Garrett Simmons, Pete Smith and Tom Goode. The family is at the home of E. C. Shelton, 101 Pendleton Road.

The body is at the funeral home. R. E. McCall Robert Edward McCall, 52, of 600 Rockmont Road, died yester-1 day at 10:45 a.m. at a local hospital following an illness of one month.

Born at Newberry, a son of the late Robert Bruce and Augusta Eugenia (McCleskey) McCall, he had lived in Greenville for 27 years. Prior to that time, he lived for a short time in Piedmont. Mr. McCall was a graduate of the Southern College of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Ga. and was associated with Table Rock Laboratories for 25 years.

At the time of his death he was with Eckerd's Drugs, as pharmacist. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearle Eargle McCall; a daughte, Miss Sara Eugenia McCall, and a son, Robert Edward McCall of Greenville. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m.

at The Mackey Mortuary by Rev. George R. McMaster. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. It is respectifully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials sent to Thornwell Orphanage at Clinton.

Walker Dilworth of 300 W. Morgan City View, widow of William Perry Dilworth, died at 11:30 a.m. yesterday at her home following two months of serious illness. She had been in declining health over a period of years. Mrs.

Dilworth was born Nov. 17, 1890 at Pelzer, a daughter of the late Jesse R. and Annie Grif- Sears Boosts Dividend, Gives 25 Cents Extra CHICAGO Sears, Roebuck Co. Wednesday announced an increase in its regular quarterly dividends from 30 to 35 cents plus a year-end extra dividend of 25 cents a share and reported that its net income for the nine months ended Oct. 31 set an all-time record.

They will be paid to shareholders of record Dec. 1. With these dividends, the total paid for the fiscal year 1961 will be $1.50, which represents the highest total dividend in the history of the company. In fiscal 1960 the company paid dividends totalling $1.40 which included a 20-cent year-end extra. Sears fiscal year ends on Jan.

31. Charles H. Kellstadt, chairman of the board, and Crowdus Baker, president, noted that earnings per in the first nine months were nearly 9.7 per cent ahead of last year. They said that net income for this period was $128,202,000 or $1.70 per share, after provision of $119,700,000 for' estimated federal income taxes. Net income for the first nine months last year was $116,901,000 or $1.55 per share after allowing for federal income taxes of $117,500.000.

The company also provided for a contribution of $28,490,000 to the savings and profit sharing pension fund of Sears, Roebuck Co. employes this year, compared with $26,700,000 in the same period last year. Kellstadt and Baker said they anticipate a record sales volume in the fourth quarter. Sears gross sales for the nine months totalled $3.241,323.794, a new record and 2.6 per cent above sales in the same period of last year, the previous record. PROTEST MEAT PRICES PARIS (UPI) Butchers boycotted wholesale meat purchases Wednesday in a continued protest against government price fixing.

After 11 a.m. today the body will be at the home. Johnny Evans Johnny Marion Evans, 18, of the Powdersville community, Anderson County, died at a local hospital Tuesday at 11:35 p.

m. after an illness of six months. A son of L. N. (Bill) Evans and Dora Sue Roe Evans, he was born June 28, 1943 in Anderson County and had spent his entire life in the Powdersville community.

He would have graduated this year at Wren High School. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church, of the Young Peoples department and of the Training Union. Surviving also are a brother. Ernest Evans of the home: his maternal grandmother, Mrs. I.

N. Roe of the home, and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. M. A. Evans of Six Mile.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 4:30 p. m. by Rev. Jack Ward at Siloam Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

THOMPSON Fifteen persons have obtained application papers and Civil Service forms in preparation for a try at the job as postmaster of the Greenville Post Office, but no names of candidates are yet available. Rumors to the contrary, no Negro has so far obtained an application in person. David Jones, Civil Service officer at the Greenville Post Office, said yesterday he has given out 15 papers and forms to persons applying for them. He said these candidates will fill out the papers and mail them to the U. S.

Civil Service Commission in Washington, D. C. Mr. Jones said he will continue to give the papers and forms to any citizen who requests them up to Dec. 5, the closing date for applications.

He said the examinations are tentatively scheduled to be held here 30 days later, Jan. 4. Candidates for the postmaster examination will not be required to take a written examination but will be rated on a scale of 100 on the basis of an evaluation of their business or professional experience and their general fitness for the position. The evaluation will be made from ments by the competitor in application and on corroborative evidence secured by the Civil Service In evaluating an applicant's qualifications, these factors will be considered: 1. Quality, extent of responsibility, and diversity of experience in relation to qualification requirements.

2. Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and direct the in size and complexity affairs of a business comparable post office (including ability to effectively supervise employes). 3. Ability to deal effectively with associates and the general public. 4.

General reputation as to character, morals, habits, honesty, realibility and trustworthiness. Applicants must have reached their 18th birthday on the closing date for acceptance of applications. Persons over 70 cannot be appointed. A list of eligible competitors is set up after the examination is completed. Veteran eligibles with a compensable service-connected disability of 10 per cent or more are placed first on this list in the order of their rating.
