What might have been a serious accident was narrowly averted yester day afternoon about 2i30 o'clock, when Southern train Xo. 12 northbound, crashed into a standing street car at Branwood Crossing, a short distance from the city limits and practically demolished the rear end of the car. Most of the passengers jumped from the car in time, to save their lives, only a few being injured and only one. Mrs. Giles receiving in Mauldin Fldral Co.

S. Commissioner E. M.

Blythe. The case is rather complicated owing to the fact that the name of "Junie" is used in reference to two women. Last fall, Marion Aiken, a resident of Brandon mfill, enlisted in the regular army, and is now stationed at Fort Maryland, Washington, D. C. He declared he had a dependent wife and gave her name as Jessie Aiken.

About a month ago a letter containing a check for $30, addressed to "Junie Aiken," was delivered at the residence of the woman whose name is Mrs. Junie Golden. She admitted cashing the check later and sigtning iher name as "Junie Aiken." Investigations which showed that no such person as this lived at Brandon led to her arrest yesterday. However, most of the passengers on the car including all or those on the rear end, were success ful in vacating it before the collision health service went to Clemson College Sunday to investigate a reported case of meningitis there. The report sent to the State board was evidently alarming, as there was talk of placing all the board's facilities for fighting the disease at Clemson. Assistant Surgeon Prather found, two miles from the college, a negrob oy suffering with meningitis.

It was reported that the boy had just reached his home and had contracted the disease in Greenville, where he had been for some time He. was ill when ho left here, it is said, but it was not known what the trouble was uitil an examination was made by Assistant Sureon Prather. The fact that the case is so far removed from Clemson and that there is no communication between tee college and the community in which the boy resides prompted the decision that it will. not be necessary to put on any quarantine at ttie college or to take any strict precautionary measures. There is now at Columbia a special railway car, fitted out with everything necessary to fight meningitis, it being the property of the United States Public Health Service and having been rushed from Chicago to oC-lumbia some time ago when a large number of cases of the disease were found to exist in the capital city.
