died Thursday. Born in Madison County, N.C., he was a retired employe of Inman Mills, a charter member of the First Freewill Baptist Church, and a deacon emeritus. Suriving also are daughters, Lois Collins, Helen Bradley and Judy Jones of Inman; sons, Glenn Shelton of Inman and James Shelton of Spartanburg; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Violet Knowhaw Townsend, 46, wife of Eddie Brooks Townsend, died Thursday. Born in Rome, a daughter of Virginia McCrickard Knowhaw of Ninety Six and the late Bill Knowhaw, she was a Methodist. Surviving also are a daughter, Mrs. Charles Coleman of Clemson; sons, Michael, Jeffery, Phillip and Sidney Townsend of the home; a sister, Mrs. Harold Hill of Florence; brothers, Sherman Knowhaw of Greenville and Sidney Knowhaw of Greenwood; and three grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Blyth Fu-. neral Home, with burial Retired educator dies SPARTANBURG Zephamiah Lawson Madden, 88, 512 Glendolyn died Thursday. Born in Laurens County, he was a graduate of Wofford College, taught school in Chesterfield and Barnwell counties, was superintendent of schools at Blackwell and was a former principal and coach at Union High School. He served during War I as educational director of the Army YMCA.

Madden was principal 'of Freemont Elementary School in Spartanburg for 17 years, and for 15 years was princpal of Cleveland Junior High School. In 1958 the Z. L. Madden Elementary School was named in his honor. He was president of the Spartanburg County Educational Association in 1939-40, president of the S.C.

Educational Association in 1942-43, and organizer of the Coordinated Educational Council in 1942-43. Madden retired from the Spartanburg city school system in 1954 but remained active in local educational affairs. He was past president of the Palmetto Council of Boy Scouts of Amercia, a member of the in Greenwood Memorial Garden. The family will be at the home of Mrs. William Akins, on the Chapels-Ninety Six Highway.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday. Alice Mack ANDERSON Alice C. Mack, 80, 411 Sanders died Wednesday. Born in Anderson County, she was a mem-' ber of Fuller's Temple Holiness Church.

Surviving are sons, James Henry and James Albert Mack of Philadelphia, a daughter, Mary Crosby of WinstonSalem, N.C.; a sister, Eleanor Walker of Washington, D.C.; a brother, William Calhoun of Camden, N.J.; and 15 grandchildren. Services will be announced by Friendly City Mortuary. Furman King ANDERSON Furman M. King, 72, Rt. 1, Townville, husband of Daisy Whitfield King, died Wednesday.

Born in Georgia, he was a farmer. Surviving also are a son, Clifton H. King of Townville; a sister, Lena K. Gray of Anderson; a brother, the Rev. Charlie King of Mobile, and two granddaughters.

Simmons, 66, 184 Cyprus, husband of Taylor Simmons, died Thursday in Columbia. Born in Savannah, he was a retired carpenter, a member of Broad Street United.

Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. Saturday at Gray Funeral Chapel, with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Harling Sponseller Harling Eugene Sponseller 56, Rt. 1, Fair Play, Seminole Point, husband of Laughlin Sponseller, died Thursday.

A native of Frederick, he was the son of Grace Humblebough Sponseller and the late Sponseller Sr. of Philadelphia, Pa. He was in the industrial food service business, president of Canteen of Dixie, and a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. He was a memof the Greenville Rotary Club, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the S.C. Chamber of Commerce and was past president of the S.C.

Automatic Merchandise Association, was a Mason served 11 years with the Navy. Surviving also are a daughter, Catherine S. Helms of Charlotte; sons, Thomas L. Sponseller of Columbia and H.E. Sponseller III of Taylors; a sister, Mary: Lawrace of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Elberta Nelson Bradberry; daughters, Mrs. William Henry Kay of Columbia and Mrs. Harold Pruitt of Abbeville; sons, Perrin, Tom, Johnny and James Bradberry of Abbeville; brothers, Vernon and Louis Bradberry of Abbeville; a sister, Bradberry of Abbeville; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Midway Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Harris Funeral Home. friends p.m. Friday.

The family is at the home of a sister-in-law, Cynthia W. Calwell, 16-H Fielderest Village. W.B. Gray IVA W.B. "Bill" Gray, 70, Oak a retired county commissioner, husband of Sara L.

Gray, died Wednesday. A native of Anderson County, he was a member of Iva First Baptist Church. Surviving also are Benny Caldwell Benny Rufus Caldwell, 213 S. Calhoun died Monday. A native of Greenville, son of the late Benny J.

and Hattie Anderson Calwell, he was a veteran of Korean conflict. Surviving are brothers, Herbert L. Caldwell of Greenville and Walter H. Caldwell of Oakland, a sister, Corine E. Jenkins of Brooklyn, N.

Y. Services will be 11. a.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The body is at Clark's Funeral Home, where the family will receive "What on earth is going on?"
