SPARTANBURG As soon as meeting dates can be set up, the Spartanburg County Council will begin interviewing five candidates for the county's top position. The council was presented with the names and credentials of seven applicants for the county administrator's job Friday. Of the seven, the council has decided to interview five of the candidates, Council Chairman Robert G. Rowell said. The names of the applicants were given to the councilmen during a closed session.

But before the councilmen voted to go into executive sesson, the two consultants from Public Research and Management Inc. outlined their criteria for selecting the final candidates. Personnel consultants Calvert Wray and Charles F. Laues said they based their decision on the top seven candidates on a combination of education and years of experience. The council had advertised for applicants with undergraduate or graduate work in public administration.

But the consultants said they included several candidates who did not meet the educational requirements, but had long years of experience in government management. The two consultants also stressed the need for confidentiality of the identities of the final candidates. They said several of the candidates, because of current job considerations, stipulated they would withdraw their applications if their names were released. The consultants will be contacting for the council the five candidates for the council to set up interviews. The interviews will be conducted by the council-men during the next several weeks, and some county officials think the county might have a new administrator on the job by July 1.
