Thomas McAfee, funeral director. said former Vice President Richard M. Nixon. He praised Burch and Goldwater for statesman-like acceptance of the leadership settlement first demanded by moderate Republicans. A growing band of Midwesterners, many of them conservatives, had joined the demand for Burch's resignation.

BULLETIN CHICAGO (UPI) The Republican National 1 Committee removed the Goldwater symbol from its chairmanship Friday and then heard Barry M. Goldwater accept responsibility for mistakes he made in his losing 1964 presidential campaign. Goldwater told the committee: "I guess I had to come to the unhappy conclusion that you had the wrong man" in the contest against President Johnson. Nixon said the settlement averted the danger that Goldwater's conservative followers might bolt to a third party if Burch was ousted in a Chicago showdown vote. "What we need now is a second party," the former vice president said.

Bliss himself said it showed that Goldwater and Burch put the interests of the party above "their own aspirations and desires." "Sure we can fight as a team without all thinking alike," said Sen.
