Site Purchased Columbia Building Planned By COLUMBIA Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina has purchased an site in the 1800 block Street here, acextensive, cording to J. Willis Cantey, president. Bank officials said plans for development will be announced but that exhaustive studies have shown this is the best location in Columbia for a major office building. The property, which fronts more than 300 feet along Main Street, includes the Jefferson Hotel site and also fronts on Laurel, Assembly and Richland streets. "This land acquisition is believed to be one of the largest privately owned areas in downtown Columbia and is solid evidence of our bank's faith in the future of our capital city," Cantey said.

Major portions of the land were acquired from the Klondike Corp. and the Jefferson Hotel Corp. Plans To Finance Health Education Network Explored By LEE BANDY WASHINGTON Groundwork for financing a comprehensive health education center network in Greenville and three other areas of South Carolina were explored at a conference in Washington this week. The program was announced Dec. 4 at the Greenville Technical Education Center, where a five-year pilot operation ing $5.8 million will be carried out.

Sen. Donald Russell, who attended the conference of state and local representatives to discuss the mammoth undertaking, said federal agencies are giving full consideration to sources of funds. Representing South Carolina were Keener Garrett of Greenville; Jack Sharupa of Greenville, president of the South Carolina State Hospital Association, and Archie J. Lugenbeel, a staff member for the association; Robert Woodward of the state committee for Technical Education, and Floyd Johnson, manpower director for the committee. The program, Russell said, "Holds much promise for South Carolina and will complement efforts already instituted in hospital construction, health-care financing and scientific research." Long-range plans call for establishing similar centers in Richland, Charleston and Florence-Darlington, if the Greenville project proves to be successful.

Federal agencies, the senator noted, giving "full consideration" are, sources of funds. They include almost every branch of the Health, Education Welfare Department and the Office of Economic Opportunity. Russell pledged to continue his efforts to gain "maximum possible financing under a variety of federal programs which might be utilized." Observing the need for technical, administrative and other personnel in the health-care field a is a already "far outstripping" supply, he remarked. "The comprehensive effort envisioned in this project would place South Carolina in an enviable position in the next several decades. Conversely failure take any action could lead to critical manpower shortages." "New hospitals, spectacular.

advances in new drugs, Medicare valuable as they may be" are not sufficient. And an adequate health program demands more doctors, more dentists, more nurses, more therapists, more health technicians of every sort. And nowhere is the need greater than in South Carolina." PAVEMENT PIONEER TOLEDO First concrete road built in the U. S. was a 50-foot strip, 220 feet long, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, in 1892.
