I I x- 4- I mist- Callaham booted the conversion and gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead, which turned out to be good enough to win. The back-breaking touchdown pass came with 7:16 remaining in the final quarter. With only 1:34 left to go, Easley quarterback Bill Fortner was chased into the end zone and couldn't get out.

Palmetto tackle Phillip Gosnell put a bone-crushing tackle on the Wave signal-caller and dropped him in the Easley end zone for a Palmetto safety. Easley tried an on-side kick, which they recovered, but it was nullified when the Green Wave was detected for being offsides. The Mustangs then received the ball and ran out the clock to hand Easley its second defeat in nine games. Palmetto is also 7-2 on the season. TEN Ball Bounced EASLEY Palmetto, shut out for three quarters, broke loose in the final period and upset Easley, 9-6, in a Western AAA Conference game Friday night at Brice Field.

One bounce of the football brought the Mustangs from a six-point deficit to the come-from-behind win. In the fourth quarter, Palmetto quarterback Keith Campbell dropped back to pass following the reception of a Green Wave punt at the Palmetto 33-yard line. Campbell lofted the ball downfield and a Wave defender tipped the ball. But Mustang halfback Buster Wooten was in the right place at the right time. The speedy back snatched the ball out of the air and scampered 67 yards to score as a surprised Green Wave defensive unit looked on in awe.

Mike UNION Woodruff, the number three ranked team in state high school football competition, scored 20 quick first quarter points here Friday night to down the hosting Union Yellow Jackets, 34-7, in an Eastern AAA battle. Alert defender Ricky Cherry picked off two wayward Jacket passes to set up two tallies in the first half running one back 45-yards. Bridges plunged over from one yard but the extra point was no good. John Victor At Slater Union, TR Rambles To 67-0 Win Third Victory Trojans Roll By Walhalla low Jackets ground out tour touchdowns, two by James Hawkins and two by Alex Dobson, and then coasted in with reserves for an easy 28-7 football decision over Berea at Greer Friday night. Greer started the Bulldogs on the way to their ninth straight loss of the season wnen ena Keith Hannon recovered a Berea fumble on the three-yard line. Three plays later, fullback Hawkins bucked over for the first six-pointer. Reig Chesson kicked all four extra points for Greer.

Still in the first Quarter, the Yellow Jackets drove 48, yards in seven Dlavs for another TD, climaxed when Hawkins drove in from three yards out. Greer Halfback Dobson took 1 1. a pitciiout trom quaneruac Johnny Kay in the second quarter and raced 64 yards down the sidelines for the most spectacular play of the game, giving Greer a 21-0 halftime lead. The two teams traded TD's in the third quarter with Greer around right end on a nine-yard scoring first as Dobson went romp to paydirt, ending a six-play, 53-yard drive. Included in that drive was a 29-yard scamper by Dobson.

Chesson's kick gave the homestanding eleven their final margin of 28 points. Berea got on the scoreboard against Coach Phil Clark's reserves by driving 80 yards, mostly on the ground. Halfback Dennis Bayne went over center from two yards out for tne six points and quarterback Jason Alexander passed to end Dale Robertson for the extra point. Graniteville Nips Barnwell GRANITEVILLE Barnwell High's Warhorses took a 6-0 lead over Graniteville High here Friday night, and then watched the home team score twice and win, 12-9. The Warhorses scored first on a 29-yard pass from Quarterback Denny Forshay to end Stewart Nilsen, giving the visitors a 6-0 halftime lead. Forshay kicked a 25-yard field goal for the 9-0 margin in the third quarter before Graniteville got their offense moving in high gear. Graniteville halfback Ken Wydner scored both of his team's touchdowns, from two and four yards out.

only four for the Razorbacks as Carolina ran its record to 3-6. Walhalla is 3-5 on the season. Jimmy Von Hollen got the first Carolina TD when he, tallied from three yards out. Maret Cobb converted and the Trojans led 7-0 after the first quarter of play. Carolina came back in the second period to score when Bobby Brewer hit Kerry Fennell with a 12-yard scoring pass.

Brewer Seventh Win Easley held a 6-0 intermission advantage when the Green Wave drove 49 yards with a 32-yard jaunt by Gary Youngblood the big play. Quarterback Doug Bridges bolted over from one-yard out for the lone scoring of the first half. Johnny Leslie's PAT was good but a five-yard penalty nullified the kick and Leslie had to try again. This time he missed. The Green Wave defense held Palmetto to no first downs in the opening half but the explosive Mustang offense opened up in the second half to overtake the deefnding state Triple-A champs.

Hamp Auld Carolinas PGA Champ FAYETTE VILLE N. C. (AP) Hampton Auld of Raleigh shot a closing 73 Friday for 210 and a one-stroke victory over Sonny Ridenhour for the 38th annual Carolinas PGA cham pionship. Ridenhour, of High Point, was five strokes down starting the final round of the 54-hole tournament but caught Auld on the first nine and held a one-stroke average advantage at the turn. Auld, whose victory was worth $1,000, pulled back even on the 11th hole with a par and then parred the 18th to nip Ridenhour by a stroke.

Ridenhour had a three under Dar 69 for the final round and collected $700 for sec ond place. Defending champion Bobby Mitchell of Danville, also closed with a 69, but his 214 left him in fifth place behind Nor man Flynn of Lexington, S. and George Smith of New Bern, who finished at 213 on respec tive rounds of 69 and 72. Ware Shoals Romps Over Crescent IVA The Ware Shoals High Hornets scored in every quarter to whip Crescent, 33-7, in a WEBACH Conference football game held here Friday night. The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the first period when Willie Freeley galloped 60 yards to score and then added the extra point for a short lived 7-0 lead.

The Tigers came back and knotted the count at 7 all when Cary Wiles went over from one yard out. The score was set up on a 60 yard pass interception by Glen Gable. Mike Stewart added the placement. Ware Shoals took a 14-7 lead to the dressing room at halftime after scoring in the second period. Jim Skinner capped a 50-yard march on a two yard run and Johnny Evans ran the point after.

The Hornets buzzed their way to two more touchdowns in the third period. The first came when Melvin Miller took an 11-yard scoring aerial from Tom my Weeks and the second was also made by Miller, when he hauled in a 34-yard pass from Freeley. Wildcats Take 72-0 Victory WINNSBORO Quarterback' Wayne Renwick passed for four touchdowns and scored a pair himself in leading the Winnsboro Wildcats to a 72-0 romp over Buford here Friday night. The two biggest quarters for Winnsboro were the first and fourth when the Wildcats scored 20 and 26 respectively. The se cond and third were also pro ductive as 13 points were col lected in each.

Randy Flanders successfully started the rout when he scored on a 44-yard run early in the first penod and then Renwick took over. He first tossed a 41-yard pass to Ray Croxton, scored on a five-yard run, broke loose for 25 yards and came back with a three-yard plunge. He com pleted his first half output with a one-yard toss to Will Pope. George Coleman continued the assault when he broke loose on an 80-yard punt return before Renwick took back over. Renwick fired his final two scoring tosses when he hit Pope for 33 yards and Wx Joe Wilkes for ten yards.

Pete Steward had a seven-yard run and Ronald Sellars went over from one-yard to complete the rout. Blue Flame Gets 6-6 Deadlock PICKENS Daniels and Pick ens battled to a 6-6 tie here Friday night, following a scoreless first half in a Western AAA Conference game. Daniels broke the scoring ice on the third frame on a 21-yard pass interception and run back by Radge Duncan. The conversion failed.

Pickens could not move until the final quarter when Joe Far-ry almost single handedly squeezed out a TD from the stingy Lions. Farry recovered a Lion fumble at the Daniel 45 and carried six times for 16 yards including the one yard scoring plunge. The snap back for the conversion was fumbled and the game ended in a deadlock. Farry led all rushers with 54 yards in 12 attempts while Blue Flame receiver Randy Fowler grabbed four tosses for 80 yards. Pickens had 13 first downs for 205 yards total offense while Daniels had 6 for 109.

Woodmont Is 31-20 Victor In Loop Game NINETY-SIX Quarterback Steve Chandler, on the first series of downs, turned a fake punt into a 56-yard touchdown pass to Don Caldwell, orbiting Woodmont's Wolverines to a 31-20 WEBACH AA football victory over ninety Six here Fridav night. Woodmont jumped out front with the first three touchdowns in this offensive duel and coasted home with its third win of the season againsst six losses. Ninety Six has a record of 1-8 now.

Woodmont halfback kept the explosion tactics going in the first quarter, scoring the Wolverines' second TD on a 73-yard jaunt around end on the first play after Ninety-Six has puntea to tne 27. Two long Chandler Dasses to Larry Sullivan, for 22 and 29 yairdis, 6et up the Wolves third tally, scored by fullback John Turner on a one-yard plunge. Ninety-Six got on the scoreboard in the first half when Buddy Crowder recovered a fumble in the end zone after Randy McFarland had plunged in for the points. Louie Murray passed to John Ek for 20 yards to set up the score started when Murray intercepted on pass on his own 26. Murray passed to Hancock for 16 and another Ninety-Six tally and ended the scoring by Jutting Jimmy Whitmire from 31 yards out lor a touchdown.

Steve Chandler hit Mike Chandler for 17 yards and a Woodmont TD, and Mike Trotter completed the visitors scoring by intercepting a Murray pass and running in from 35 yards out. Bob Hewitt Downs Cox ABERAVON, Wales (AP) -Bob Hewitt, 28-year-old Australian-born South African, defeated Mark Cox of Britain, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and reached the final of the men's singles in the DeWar Cup Lawn Tennis championship scries Friday. He meets Owen Davidson of Australia, who defeated Gerald Battriek of Wales 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the title round. Bears Race By Chapman the second play of the game and Danny Phillips converted. Rattlers Bow ToWestside Homer Mattress scampered 10 yards to score the winning touchdown for the Westside Rams in a 14-7 win over Lincoln here Friday night. The Rams scored in the opening period when George Gannt galloped 10 yards and Richard Calhoun added the PAT. But a third quarter run by Lonnie Teasley put the Rattlers back in the game. Teasley sprinted 70 yards and Perry. Smith booted the conversion.

Anderson converted on the second play. James Robertson scored on the next series of 'Dog downs on a 70-yard jaunt through the Slater team and Anderson again kicked the PAT. After an ex change of punts Travelers Rest tallied their final TD of the first quarter on a 35-yard run by Mike Ray. Spartanburg's Sam Houston turned in the defensive gem of the night in the final quarter when he caused the Cavaliers to fumble after driving down to the Crimson Tide 31-yard line to save the game for the cross-town visitors. Dorman got on the scoreboard first in the opening period when Jim Morgan broke loose and scampered 88 yards to score but the try for the point failed. Held scoreless in the first period. Spartanburg got its touchdown in the second quarter when Donald Jennings scored from two yards out to climax a 6yard drive.

Blcky Hallighan's 34-yard pass to Mike Duncan was the big gainer in the series. Ray Monroe's conversion proved to be the margin of difference. Gene Campbell scored the first touchdown on a three-yard run and Terry Greer followed on a four-yard jaunt. Dean Collins added a conversion after the Initial touchdown. Pacolet scored 18 points in the second period starting with a 12-yard touchdown by Ricky Motts on a blocked Raider punt. Quarterback Bobby Guyton passed to right end Roy Harris for 68-yard and 4 2 -yard touchdowns. The extra point conversion attempts were no g(Ind'the fourth period Craig Banks passed to Donnie Padgett for 11 yards and the final score of the game. Cowpens threatened once in the fourth period when they drove deep into Pacolet territory but efforts were stalled as time ran out.
