The Greenville News and Piedmont -Monday, September 3, 1979-7-B girl's body found GREENFIELD. Tenn. (UPI) Authorities found the body of an 8-year-old girl Sunday who was kidnapped while riding a bicycle near her home in rural West Tennessee. Several hours later, a 26-year-old man with a prior conviction for indecent exposure was taken into custody by police for questioning. Authorities said Cary Medlin's fully clothed body was found about 2:30 pm.

CDT in a wooded field two miles from Greenfield, about 130 miles northeast of Memphis. The girl, who was abducted Saturday night when she got into a car driven by a man who asked for directions to her stepfather's house, suffered a stab wound in the throat, possibly made by ice pick, authorities said. Arrested A short time after her body was discovered, a Tennessee Highway Patrolman arrested a Greenfield man near Medina, 40 miles south of the kidnap scene, and returned the unidentified suspect to Greenfield. The body was found after the girl's stepfather, Mickey Stout, emerged from his house at 11:30 a.m. to plead for her safe return.

"All we want you to do is call," Stout asked the kidnapper. "We'll do anything you want us to. We want her back." Members of the Weakley County rescue squad discovered the body in a field off a dead-end road. After a preliminary examination, the county coroner said she did not appear to have been sexually molested. Warned Authorities had learned earlier in the day that girls at a Sharon, school near Greenfield recently were warned not to accept rides with strangers because a man had been trying to coax children into his car.

Norman Medlin of Memphis, the girl's uncle, heard of the warning from a Methodist preacher whose daughter attends the school. He alerted agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Criminal Identification, who began searching for the principal of the school to investigate the report. The suspect was arrested as the search for the kidnapper of the thirdgrader intensified.
