in Barnwell, the only burial ground for low-level radioactive waste in the East, has been ordered to stop accepting all liquid wastes from medical facilities, health officials said Tuesday. "It's just because of the volatile nature of the chemicals," said Alice Parsons, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. Last month, DHEC forbade Chem-Nuclear from burying the chemical toluene. Starting Thursday, the company will be unable to accept any "scintillation liquids" used in hospitals, medical schools and research facilities. Lee Hubbard, site manager at Chem-Nuclear, said toluene was the most controversial chemical.

Radioactive isotopes are suspended in the chemical, which is used in laboratories. It is "not a desirable product" for burial at Chem-Nuclear because officials feared it might seep through the clay into the aquifer, Hubbard said. "Toluene is a double hazard it's a carcinogenic and it tends to break down it might allow a transgression of the aquifer," he said. He said Chem-Nuclear has agreed to the DHEC order. "There's no disagreement on this one," said Hubbard, noting that radioactive liquids in the past have comprised only 5 percent of the materials buried at Chem-Nuclear.

He said he did not know how much liquid waste was already buried on the site. The firm's license does not allow it to take liquid wastes from nuclear generating plants, he said. LIBERTY Sidney A.
