Shooting Begins On 'The Abdication' HOLLYWOOD "'The Abdi- locations in Italy during the AT THE MOVIES It's noble to pick up the plight of men behind prison walls and put it on movie screens, provided the story is done with insight, truth and feeling. "Fortune And Men's Eyes" attempts to pick up this plight, but its weakness is that it fails to capture the real story behind prison walls. It has little insight, not much truth and no feeling. What is so unfortunate is that obviously a lots of time and money were spent to convey this contrived story and little will be reaped in bringing the problems of prisons to those outside. It seems to me that, after all, makers of a movie of this nature would be concerned about causes of prison riots and try to result in something that would help the cause.

In all fairness it must be said that "Fortune And Men's Eyes" did make a noble effort, but the film missed out when it took an all too shallow look at the injustices behind prison bars. Smitty is the central figure who has been picked up in the free world on a marijuana charge. It does visually get the point across that if you take an innocent, inexperienced young man guilty of a misdemeanor and put him in a cell with a hardened or sadistic criminal, then chances are his innocence will turn to guilt and his inexperi. ence to experience. Rocky is the hardened criminal who takes it upon himself to make the rest of the prisoners, particularly Smitty, do as he says, even if it does mean an occasional riot, fight or death. Queenie is the comic relief which takes your mind off the horrors and outrageous fortunes which abound, though he is so overdone that after a couple of his routines he borders on the obnoxious. Much of "Fortune And Men's Eyes," which, incidentally, has excellent music, is so mechanical that at times the film looks like a tragedy done with puppets.

Perhaps that was the intention of its producers since the atmosphere of prisons would seem to be rather robot-like, but this does nothing to help get the message across that all is not well is this free society. One point the film deserves to be commended on is its clever use of Shakespeare adapted to music. It's just a shame the message of "Fortune And Men's Eyes" is not as Shakespearean as its music.
