Yes, by all means, see Last Tango. -Aaron Schindler, Family Circle gmmmmm mm- Deader's Digest By ROBERT L. WILSON News Staff Writer SPARTANBURG WSPA-TV in Spartanburg did not televise the controversial antiwar play "Sticks and Bones" set for Friday night because "management objected to its content," the station's program director said Monday. Dave Handy said the station received more than 50 calls after the Tony award-winning drama was cancelled. He said 79 other Columbia Broadcasting System affiliates out of 202 also cancelled the program.

"We objected to the story line," Handy said. "We had no objection to the technical aspect of the production." "Sticks and Bones," written by David Rabe, is a no-punches-hold drama about a blind American veteran of the Vietnam war and his relations with his family. The play throws jabs at religion, family life, racism and war. It was originally scheduled for March 9 just as the first prisoners of war were returning from Vietnam. "The drama holds family life and a Catholic priest up to ridicule," Handy said.

"It portrays an atypical family. The ultimate solution was to have the POW take his own life which we objected to. "It Is written in the form of an allegory and is somewhat difficult to follow. It is more suitable for the stage, "No doubt the program had a message, but it was controversial." Handy said that after the March postponement the play was reset to be telecast Friday because the CBS network had made an agreement with the drama's producer, Joseph Papp. Papp and the American Civil Liberties Union criticized CBS for the postponement.

The program director said the drama has no sponsor and doubts that it will ever be repeated on TV. "It has a disclaimer that Vou should not watch It if you feel offended," he said. Not being able to televise the drama "causes us great agony," Handy said. "We do not like to censor programs. "We've presented 'In Cold cleaning up the language, because we thought it' was a story worth telling.

We've also carried 'Who's Afraid of Virginia But, Handy continued, "We felt the majority of our audience would not want to see 'Sticks and We have the right to not carry a network program." The drama would find a receptive audience in a theatre type of presentation, the program director said, but it is not suitable for the mass media. "It was produced for a special audience," he said, "people with a liberal bent, the college-educated." presents ADMISSION: $2.00 40 S.C. tax $2.40 Total NO PASSES ACCEPTED NO ONE UNDER 18 ADMITTED tSSBSSXUi Kiel STARTS TnMnppnw.
