His best finishes on the Winston Cup circuit before Sunday were three seconds, two of them at Darlington, where he was runner-up in the Southern 500 in 1969.

The two Grand National stars will be vying against some of the top drivers in the South in the $6,500 Permatex 200, a 100-mile National Sportsman Championship event. The winner will receive $1,200. A preliminary race is scheduled Saturday for 8:30 p.m. with the Permatex to follow. Qualifying will be held from 6:30 to 8.

But Brooks pulled it off last Sunday in the Talladega 500 and will be out to do it again in the Permatex 200 for late-model sportsman cars. Brooks will be driving a Ford Fairlane instead of his Plymouth and Pearson will be in a Chevelle, both competitive cars this year at the NASCAR sanctioned oval. The head-to-head confrontation will not be the first for the Spartanburg residents, but it will be one of the few times they have had parity.

Pearson has been driving for the famed Woods Brothers this year while Brooks has hitched rides from track to track before settling into a Plymouth out of Atlanta, recently with the Crawford Brothers. "I think we've started something and one of the things that makes the future here a bright one is the cooperation between the front office, the manager, the players and the minor league operation." "The decisions we've made this year were made on a cooperative basis, and I think that's a healthy thing," he said.

"I'm very grateful for the way the players have played this year, and I think they can be even better." "This is the time of year when we always start looking toward the future," General Manager Jim Wilson said. "We're now in the process of lining up 'our organization for next year, and I can think of no better place to start' than with our No. 1 man. Whatever success we've had should fall directly on Del's shoulders." Selig said the club's future "not only looks bright, but far more optimistic than it looked last year." "We've come this far, but we've got a long way to go to reach the goal we want to reach," he said. "The only goal this organization has is winning an American League championship and a World Series." MILWAUKEE (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers, whose abrupt turnabout on the field and at the gate has been one of baseball's surprises this year, rewarded Manager Del Crandall Tuesday with a new one-year contract.

"I would say the Milwaukee Brewers this year have made more progress in all phases of operation than even the most optimistic had dared to predict in March," club president Bud Selig told a news conference. Crandall, former all-star catcher for the old Milwaukee Braves, was hired through the 1973 season when he replaced Dave Bristol May 30, 1972. The new pact, which includes a salary increase, is effective through 1974. The Brewers, founded through expansion as the Seattle Pilots in H969, finished a distant last in the American League East and drew only 600,440 in their third season here last year. This year they have led the division or been in a virtual tie for it 17 times and in one stretch of June won 15 of 16 games, including 10 in a row.

Currently in fifth place with a 57-59 record, the club has drawn 917,979 at home this year. SHOWS FREE Kiddle Shew "SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST" WED. 10:30 A.M. COLONY EASLEY 859-9392 Nouiicrift, Inc. 1613 East North Strati tratnvflle, S.C 29602 GsAtJtnMK I'm interested in remodeling.
