He attended Columbia University-He was an electronics engineer with Bendix Corporation in Teter-boro, N.J., for many years before he retired. He had represented the Bendix as an engineer in Japan. Sonia Smith Ferguson, 28, of 10 Woodward Brandon Community, died Thursday, October 11, 1990 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born August 14, 1962 in Greenville, she was the daughter of Joseph "P.J." and Brenda Sizemore Smith. She was a member of Pleasantview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bruce E. Ferguson, a daughter, saved and grew into Christian maturity under his ministry.

The Reverend Gaines was born in Spartanburg County on May 18, 1906. He was the son of the late Reverend Matt Jackson and Willie Mae Seay Gaines. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Minnie Olivia Hamilton Gaines. The Reverend Gaines was a graduate of the Theology Department of Central Wesleyan College.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae Lyda Gaines; two daughters, Mrs. Leo (Sarah Annette) Fellwock and Mrs. Leo (Betty) Bryant; two sons, Mr. William Kenneth Gaines and the Reverend Ted Hamilton Gaines, all of Greenville.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Mr. Bruce Lyda of Greenville, Miss Susan Lyda of Inman, Mrs. Bill (Carole) Meyer of Madden Station and Mrs Beryl Rumfelt of Waterloo. The Reverend Gaines is survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and by eight step-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-mother, Mrs.

Lula Gaines and by an aunt, Mrs. Hettie Collins, both of Greenville. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 13, 1990 at the Greenville First Wesleyan Church, Texas Avenue, at 2 PM. "J.W." GAINES The Reverend Joseph William Gaines, a retired minister in the Wesleyan Church, died Thursday, October 11, 1990. The Reverend Gaines served in the South Carolina District of Wesleyan Church for more fifty years. He served the following churches in the district: Conestee, Knighton's Chapel, Iva, Westminster, Clem-son, Mt. Olivet, Anderson, Arial, Startex, Pelzer, Woodside Avenue, Fountain Inn, Landrum and Morgan Memorial. He also ducted many revival meetings in various churches in South Caro-' lina and In several other states.

Under the ministry of the Re-r verend Gaines, hundreds of people came to know salvation by the grace of God in Jesus Christ All the churches served by the Reverend Gaines grew dramati-- cally, and In almost every case, significant improvements were made in the physical facilities.
