Francis Hospital in Greenville following an extended illness. She was a homemaker and a member of Cannon Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are children, Mary Ann Porter and Jonnie Collins, both of Easley; David Eugene Simmons of Liberty, Tommy Simmons and Linda Joyce Nix of Easley, and Patsy S. Raines of Pickens. Services: 2 p.m.

Paul W.Smith Paul Waymond Smith, 81, of 31 Nora Drive, died Oct. 10, 1990, following a sudden illness and several months of declining health. He attended Columbia University-He was an electronics engineer with Bendix Corporation in Teter-boro, N.J., for many years before he retired. He had represented the Bendix as an engineer in Japan. He was a member of Berea First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lucile Haley Smith of the home, and a sister, Jessie M. Smith of Passaic, N.J. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at The Mackey Mortuary with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m.

9, 1990, at a local hospital. He was a member of Burnett Baptist Church in Detroit, and a retired plumber. Surviving are six daughters, Portia Craig and Roslyn Harris of Greenville, Yvonne Smith, Karla Young and Crystal Bankston of Detroit, and Quanda Young of Los Angeles; a son, Porter C. Young of Greenville; three sisters, Hattie Wansley of Highland Park, Dora Abraham and Willie Maude Newson of New York City; and a brother, B.L. Young of Detroit.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at the Watkins, Garrett, Woods Mortuary with burial in Reedy Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the residence. Hattie Mae Redding EASLEY Hattie Mae Redding, 85, formerly of 486 Hester Store Road, died Oct. 10, 1990, at Easley Health Care Center.

She was a retired employee of Woodside Mill in Greenville and a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church in Easley. Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Belt of Easley; and two sons, Duffie Redding of Easley and Jerry Redding of Greenville. Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Peters Creek Baptist Church with burial in Oblenoy Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the home of Ruth Belt, 486 Hester Store Road in Easley.

She was a retired employee of Oxford Industries and a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church. Sonia Smith Ferguson, 28, of 10 Woodward Brandon Community, died Thursday, October 11, 1990 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born August 14, 1962 in Greenville, she was the daughter of Joseph "P.J." and Brenda Sizemore Smith. She was a member of Pleasantview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bruce E. Ferguson, a daughter, saved and grew into Christian maturity under his ministry.

The Reverend Gaines was born in Spartanburg County on May 18, 1906. He was the son of the late Reverend Matt Jackson and Willie Mae Seay Gaines. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Minnie Olivia Hamilton Gaines. The Reverend Gaines was a graduate of the Theology Department of Central Wesleyan College.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae Lyda Gaines; two daughters, Mrs. Leo (Sarah Annette) Fellwock and Mrs. Leo (Betty) Bryant; two sons, Mr. William Kenneth Gaines and the Reverend Ted Hamilton Gaines, all of Greenville.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Mr. Bruce Lyda of Greenville, Miss Susan Lyda of Inman, Mrs. Bill (Carole) Meyer of Madden Station and Mrs Beryl Rumfelt of Waterloo. The Reverend Gaines is survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and by eight step-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-mother, Mrs.

Lula Gaines and by an aunt, Mrs. Hettie Collins, both of Greenville. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 13, 1990 at the Greenville First Wesleyan Church, Texas Avenue, at 2 PM. Burial will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 9 PM at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.

John Dee Turner, 75, of Route 2, Highway 137, Central, husband of the late Ella Velt Taylor Turner died at 9:45 AM Wednesday, October 10, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Mr. Turrjfer was born in Pickens County, a son of the late John Thomas and Nancy Averalla LaFoy Turner. He was retired from The Glenwood Plant of May-fair Mills in Easley and was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include five sons J.

Turner and Harold Turner both of Easley, Calvin Turner of Moline, Illinois, and Gerald Turner and Charles Turner both of Central and four daughters Louise Durham, Ruth Holder and Nancy Massey all of Greenville and Diane Young of Central. Also surviving is a granddaughter reared in the home Cindy Turner of Central and two sisters Minnie Taylor and Marie Waldrop both of Greenville. "J.W." GAINES The Reverend Joseph William Gaines, a retired minister in the Wesleyan Church, died Thursday, October 11, 1990. The Reverend Gaines served in the South Carolina District of Wesleyan Church for more fifty years. He served the following churches in the district: Conestee, Knighton's Chapel, Iva, Westminster, Clem-son, Mt. Olivet, Anderson, Arial, Startex, Pelzer, Woodside Avenue, Fountain Inn, Landrum and Morgan Memorial. He also ducted many revival meetings in various churches in South Caro-' lina and In several other states.

Under the ministry of the Re-r verend Gaines, hundreds of people came to know salvation by the grace of God in Jesus Christ All the churches served by the Reverend Gaines grew dramati-- cally, and In almost every case, significant improvements were made in the physical facilities. C. Byrd Wright Simpson, 89, of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, widow of Roy C. Simpson, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 1990, at her home. She was a native of Laurens County, South Carolina, a daughter of the late William F.

and Annie Greneker Wright. She attended Newberry College and was a secretary in the General Agency Office of Pilot I if Insurance in Greenville for 32 years. She had made her home in Asheville since 1978. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Asheville. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs.

one grandaughter: Susan Blume Jones of Greenville; two great grandchildren: Tom Tata, of Greenville and Becky Tate San of Greenville; one great-great grandchild: Margaret Tate of Greenville; two nephews: Dr. Frank Shealy of Greenwood and Dr. Page Fisher of Durham, N. and one niece: Anne Keppler of Northampton, Mass.
