8A Tuesday, July 11, 1995 The Greenville News Deaths might have been avoided if Smith had received treatment, doctor testifies St. Francis Health System is pleased to welcome the physicians and staff of Children's Medical Center as our partners in the delivery of superior health care to Greenville and the Upstate. According to his report, Smith was treated by a doctor after it was learned she was sexually abused by her stepfather at age 16. He also testified that, in his opinion, she was discharged prematurely from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at age 18 when she was hospitalized for nine days in November 1989. He said her follow-up treatment consisted of little more than "just brief meetings." She was seen by a doctor, for five sessions beginning on Nov.

Morgan testified that Smith had an inherited predisposition for 20-20, Morgan criticized Smith's treatment following suicide attempts at ages 13 and 18. He said she had been recommended at age 13 for a study of childhood depression, but the family never followed through. "She was counseled by a school psychologist for family problems and depression throughout the Fall of 1985 and Spring of 1986," Morgan wrote in his mental evaluation report.

"It was recommended at that time she be entered into a depression study at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, but this recommendation was not followed by her family," Morgan wrote. By William Fox Capital Bureau UNION Susan Smith might not have killed her two sons had she received the psychiatric treatment she needed following suicide attempts as a teen-ager, according to the state doctor who examined her. "Had Susan Smith had help, I think that would have made a big difference," Dr. Donald Morgan testified.

Asked by her lawyer, David Bruck, whether the proper treatment might have meant she wouldn't be on trial for killing her sons, Morgan said, "Possibly." In his report, Morgan said Smith had described out-of-body experiences in which she can see herself.

"These experiences are limited to when she is having certain sexual relations," he wrote. Amid heavy security and a blanket of media, 147 men and women squeezed onto 18 courtroom benches to be questioned by Howard, as Smith, dressed in a dark blue suit and light blue blouse, looked on. After four hours, 105 potential jurors remained. Among them is the wife of the town's police chief, R.F. Roark.

He said he and his wife have not discussed the case. Howard divided the 58 men and said he found her less depressed. The improvement has simply left her with "more energy to think about the reality of what has happened. "Her mood has lifted, and she's dealing more with the reality of the situation, and that has made her more suicidal," he testified. He said she has been taking the anti-depressant medication Prozac for the past six weeks.

"She is very guilt-ridden, and she feels she deserves punishment; and her desire would be not to continue living in prison," he said.
