He served as senior warden of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, was on the building committee of University Lutheran Church in Clemson, and was a member of St.

Christopher's Episcopal Church in Spartanburg. Surviving are a son, Wistar G. Metz of Spartanburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Omit flowers. Memorials may be made to University Lutheran Church or to the charity of one's choice.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Clemson. SPARTANBURG Gustave E. "Gus" Metz, former dean of Limestone College who also had served as assistant to the president and secretary of the board of trustees at Clemson University, died Dec.

27, 1996, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. He was 89. Metz, of Room 322, Windsor House, retired from Clemson in 1964. He then served as dean of Limestone College; director of research and development at the University of North Carolina, Asheville; and professor of mathematics at Coker College. His professional activities included leadership in the Association of Collegiate Registrars and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

He and a colleague at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, were instrumental in establishing in 1946 the grade-point system used by most universities today. Ida Lockaby Gillespie, Greenville Ida Lockaby Gillespie, 96, formerly of Ansel Street, died Dec, 26, 1996, at Grady Hipp Nursing Center following an extended illness. She retired from the Greenville Hospital System after 20 years of service and was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church where she was in the T.E.L. Sun day School Class. Surviving are two sons, Robert E. Gillespie of Anderson and Billy Joe Gillespie of Greenville; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Eugene T. "Gene" Hamby, Greenville Eugene T. "Gene" Hamby, 63, of 221 Lakewood Drive, died Dec. 26, 1996, at his home following an extended illness. He retired from Ashmore Brother Construction Co.

and was a Baptist. Surviving are his wife, Thelma T. Hamby; two daughters, Connie H. Cannon and Rhonda H. Smith, both of Greenville; and five grandchildren.

Harbuck, Easley Ina Jane Looper Harbuck, 93, of 106 S. died Dec. 27, 1996, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, N.C. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late J.T. and Annie Childress Looper.

She retired from Alice Manufacturing Arial plant, and was a member of Arial Baptist Church and the Silent Sunday School Class. She was honored in 1987 at the First Annual Hall of Fame at Cedar Springs School of the Deaf in Spartanburg. Surviving are two daughters, Ann Harbuck Andrews and Mrs. Fred (Betty Harbuck) Porter, both of Easley; five grandchildren; David Porter and his wife Mary of Survivors include his wife, Louise Jackson Cox of Columbia. Graveside services: 11:30 a.m.

She was the owner and operator of a country store in Liberty and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are a sister, Roma Simmons of Pickens; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. 27, 1996, at Self Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Patterson Business College and retired from The Style Shop. She was a member of the Phoenix Community Club, the Homemaker Club and Rehoboth Untied Methodist Church where she was a member of the Earnest Workers Sunday School Class and the Mary Witt Circle. Surviving are a son, Joe Ronald Getsinger of the home; three sisters, Margaret Henderson of Greenwood and Posey Vaughn and Hall Ouzts, both of the Phoenix community; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 'Sandy Brunnengraber, Greenville Sandra Catherine "Sandy" Phillips Brunnengraber, 50, formerly of Greene County, died Dec. 25, 1996, at Takoma Transitional Care Center. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Ashe-ville, and an account executive with Dean Witter Reynolds Inc.

She was a member of the Altrusa Club of Greenville and Westminster Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her mother, Helen Phillips, a brother, Robert Ronald Phillips of Greenville; and a sister, Barbara Miller of Mosheim, Tenn. Beatrice Bryan, Greenwood Beatrice Nelson Bryan, 90, died Dec. 26, 1996, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga. She was a retired floral designer the Rev. Richard Burgess, all of Pickens, and the Rev.
