Spores can be "shot" as far as 20 feet away.

The result is small brown dots all over windows, plants, houses and cars. In 1996, homeowners in Pennsylvania claimed more than $1 million in damage caused by the fungus. "The worst thing that I've seen is it getting on cars a and actually taking the paint off because they tried to scrape the spot off." Scraping and power washing will remove spots on glass, but it's virtually impossible to remove from surfaces like wood, vinyl siding and vehicles, said Smith. Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home mulch from trees like pine and cypress are considered safe alternatives to hardwood mulch, said Smith. It's important to remember that this is a natural process, said Smith. "Once it's real hot, the fungus isn't a problem because the fruiting bodies prefer cooler temperatures.

That is why they're active early in the morning in the spring and fall," Smith said. A simple way to test mulch is to stick a piece of white poster board into a pile of mulch that is exposed to sunlight. Wait several weeks and check for spots..
