Seigler Nelson Karam Buchanan returns to state after switch to Reform Party THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WEST COLUMBIA Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said Wednesday that switching from the Republicans to seek the Reform Party nomination has not alienated one of his biggest backers, South Carolina textile executive Roger Milliken. After a stop at an Upstate textile plant, Buchanan courted support at a West Columbia barbecue restaurant run by Maurice Bessinger, one of the state's most visible Christian conservatives.

Buchanan's positions that include renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement have the potential of helping textile makers and other manufacturers. He said his sister had spoken with Milliken, who was not unhappy about the party switch. Through the first six months of the year, however, Buchanan's reported financial support in South Carolina has been thin. Declan Klingenhagen was one of only two Buchanan contributors from the state listed in Federal Election Commission reports. employes in Gaffney Wednesday. Klingenhagen gave Buchanan's Republican campaign $1,000. Klingenhagen said he did not support Buchanan's party switch and was not sure he would follow the candidate to the Reform Party. Bessinger, however, said, 'I'm helping Pat as much as I can." The restaurant owner and Korean War veteran also supported Buchanan, a former Reagan administration speechwriter, in his failed bid for the 1996 Republican nomination..
