Prede But Keyes runs a shoestring campaign and, analysts have said, can get by on less money than the more conventional operations. At Thursday's event, supporters passed through the audience of nearly 400 with baskets for donations and emerged with most filled. He has largely depended on a charismatic speaking style, his "Renew America" rallies and local and national media interviews to get his message out. In the 1996 South Carolina Republican presidential primary won by Bob Dole, Keyes finished fifth in the eight-person field with 5,752 of the 273,583 votes cast. "We have a lot of weddings down on the beach." Lakewood has its own 500-seat amphitheater and runs a live coun-try-and-western show called "High Steppin' Country" three nights a week during the summer. The sheer amount of amenities at area camping resorts is astounding: laundry facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, grocery stores, cafes, miniature golf and entertainment. Ocean Lakes has a free bottled water station and sells 150 gallons of ice cream daily during the summer. It also has its own closed-circuit television station and a nature center, where local shells and fossils are on display. Myrtle Beach is state's top camping By Kathleen Dayton Knight-Riddkr MYRTLE BEACH Travel back in time to the mid-1950s, and picture yourself camping in Myrtle Beach.

You would have to haul water from a central location and do without electricity. And if Myrtle Beach State Park was full, you wouldn't find another campground in town. That was then, this is now. Today, Myrtle Beach is the state's top travel destination for campers and RV travelers, capturing 36 percent of the market. The Grand Strand offers nearly 10,000 campsites and is visited by at least 2 million campers every year.

July is the height of the camping season. "On Fourth of July week, we had 54 people in the overflow area around the office," said Matt Lynn, general manager of Apache Campground, off Lake Arrowhead Road near the Restaurant Row section of the Grand Strand. The campground was at 100 percent capacity for three weeks last month. Ocean Lakes Campground near Surfside Beach takes reservations 18 months in advance. Repeat business has been strong for 28 years, and the campground's marketing director, Barb Krumm, said today's campers are "third generation.".
