greenvilleonline.com WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2003 THE GREENVILLE NEWS Upstate Deaths Dorothea Baker, Greenwood Dorothea Floyd Baker, 75, resident of 623 Watford wife of Dr. Stanley Cyril Baker died Feb. 4, 2003, at her home. Born in Newberry County, Sept. 7, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Richard Clark and Blanche Smith Floyd.

She was a graduate Newberry High School and Queens College, where she majored in Art. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she formerly served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and the Parsons Committee of the church. A past president of Greenwood Medical Auxiliary and the Palladian Study she was also one nine original founders of Cambridge Academy. She enjoyed hunting in wyoming, Baker and was Newberry predeceased County. by a son, Stanley C.

Baker III. Surviving, in addition to her husband of the home, are two daughters, Kathleen Baker Seals of Gainsville, and Rebecca Baker Cox of Greenville; a son, Rhett M. Baker, of Greenwood; a brother, Richard C. Floyd of Greenwood; Batesb sister, Elizabeth F. Shealy, of and grandchildren, Mary des Sausure Baker, Sarah Alston Baker, Nathaniel Floyd Baker, Dorothea Riley Baker, Caroline Britt Seals, Mark Joel Seals Jr.

and Julia Garland Baker. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, at Oakbrook Memorial Park, with the Rev. Patricia Griffith-Fallaw officiating. The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.

Main Greenwood, SC 29646; Cambridge Academy, 103 Eastman Greenwood, SC 29649; or, to Greenwood Humane Society, P.O. 242, Greenwood, SC 29648. Barton Greer J.T. Barton 74, of 106 Blue Ridge Drive, died Feb.

3, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 10, 1928, in Greer, he was the son of the late J.T. and Nora Willis Barton, was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Greer, and was a supervisor for over 40 years for Springs Industries in Lyman. He graduated form Greer Senior High School in 1946 and from Clemson College in 1950, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Arts and Sciences.

He was a member of the Tiger Band all four years, playing trumpet. He played Taps and Reville for the Cadet Corps Daily, and played Taps for Veteran Services all across Upstate South Carolina after World War II. As a testament to his integrity and treatment of his employees, J.T. was honored in 2001 with the establishment of the J.T. Barton Jr.

Ethics Prize, a permanent endowment at Clemson University which grants annual scholarships in ethical studies for scientific and business applications. He married, Mabel Elizabeth Copeland 31, 1948, and they were married for 54 years. He loved all family gatherings, especially those at Lake Summit, N.C., which he enjoyed for almost 60 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters, Anne Barton Dewley, and her husband, Ralph, of Greer, and Connie Barton McCullough, and her husband, Tony, of Lyman; a son, Dr. Stephan C.

Barton, and his wife, Mary, of Athens, Jo Willis of Clemson and Connie Smith, and her husband, Jerry, of Taylors; eight grandchildren, Laura Ann Ward, David Russell Galloway, Edward Glenn Gibson, Erin P. Melton, John Thomas Barton, Jonathan Whilden McCullough and Matthew McCullough; one great grandchild, Owen Newton Gibson; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandchild, Shane Barton Galloway; and special first cousin, Willis. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by Dr.

Wilson Nelson. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Smith, Frank Rogers, Terry Willis, Glenn Gibson, Chuck Moore, Kennan Smith and Les Teague. Honorary escort will be Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and E.M. Compton, Dr.

His loving spirit lives on in those he is survived by: A daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Edward Price, of Harrison; sons and daughters-in-law, Morris and Rachel Bible, of Walhalla, Kenneth and Barbara Bible, and Gary and Phyllis Bible, all of Greenville, and Jimmy and Janice Bible, of Easley; 13 grandchildren; grandchildren; and three great greatgrandchildren. William Eugene Bowen, Greer William Eugene Bowen, 67, of 131 Dillard Drive, went to be with the Lord Feb. 3, 2003. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Andy and Annie Hopkins Bowen. A retired TSGT, he served as a firefighter in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1975.

After military service, he served as Assistant Chief of Gantt Fire Department and as Chief of Batesville Fire Department. He was a heart transplant recipient in 1993. He was a devoted husband, and grandfather. He was a member of El Bethel Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Rosalie Bradley Bowen, of 48 years; daughter, Caroline Bannister; a son, Randy Bowen; four grandchildren, Mandy, Cassie, Hannah and Katelyn; a sister, Helen Wilson; and two brothers, John Bowen and Wallace Bowen, all of Greenville.

-Jerry Lee Shelton, Gaffney Jerry Lee Shelton, 51, of 300 Rodgers died Jan. 4, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. He was a retired machinist. Survivors: Wife, Margaret Char- vonneau Shelton; father and stepmother, Lonnie and Judy Shelton; mother, Jean Chivington; sons, David and Garrett Shelton; a brother, T.J. Bluford Clinton. Mercer Delane Eubanks, Greenville died Monday, 2003. Mercer Eubanks, 51, Delane, Born in Greenville, May 12, 1951, he was a son of Mercer Booth and the late Edna Bagwell Eubanks. Surviving, in addition to his father, are his sisters and brothersin-law, Doneata Ann and Larry Vaughn, of Greenville, and Mentora Diane and Richard Bloom, of Indiana, his brother and sisterin-law, Homer Dale and Doris Eubanks, of Clemson; long-time friend, Yvonne McCall; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by grandparents, Mentora Bagwell and May Sr.

Della Lesley Hopkins, Easley Della Roper Lesley Hopkins, 91, of Blue Ridge Nursing Center, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Palmetto Health Baptist in Easley. Born in Pickens County, Mrs. Hopkins was a daughter of the late Oscar Fields and Alice Nalley Roper. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Jo Ann Addington, of Easley; six grandchildren; nine great-grandand seven great greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Hopkins was predeceased by both her husbands, Gordon Lesley and Norman Hopkins; two daughters, Virnell Dodgens and Sue Springfield; and one son, Sammy Lesley. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev.

Annie G. Hutchins, Anderson Annie Graham Hutchins, 87, widow of Frank Amos Hutchins, formerly of Street, died Feb. 4, 2003. Survivors: Sons, Jerry, Douglas and Sandy Hutchins; a sister, Geneva Rhodes; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Predeceased: A daughter, Myra Hutchins Dyar.

Donnie H. James, Easley Donnie "Rooney" Homer James, 49, of Pardee Personal Care, Flat Rock, N.C., died Feb. 4, 2003. Bobby Shepard Lay, Clemson Bobby Shepard Lay, widower of Helen Cain Lay, died Feb. 3, 2003. Born in Oconee County, he was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Surviving are his brothers; sisters; two sons; and three grandsons. There will be no service. Memorials may be made to Kidney Foundation. Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home. Henry Arbutus Lazar, Greenville Henry Arbutus Lazar, 77, 1100 Parkins Mill Road, died Mon- day, Feb.

3, 2003. Born in Taylors, Lazar Lazar he was the son of the late William Earl Sr. and Ollie Batson Lazar. He attended Spartanburg Methodist, where he played on the basketball team, and also attended Furman University. Mr.

Lazar enjoyed meeting and helping his customers as sales manager with Judson T. Minyard, and as a sales representawith Kevin Whitaker, for 45 years. In addition, he was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving on the financial committee and other committees, and also served as past president of his Sunday School Class. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army in the European and Pacific Theaters.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Gail Annas Lazar; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan Lazar Tevis and David Russell "Russ" Tevis IV, of Greenville; son, Ryan Keith Lazar, of Greenville; two sisters, Frances Lazar Rollins and Arzilla Lazar Harbin, both of Greenville; two brothers, William Earl (Rainey) Lazar of Greenville, and Col. Walker Martin Lazar, retired USMC, of Gainesville, two aunts, Eunice Lazar Taylor of Greenville and Bernice Lazar Sirbola of Raleigh, N.C.; and two uncles, Wade Marietta and Robert Lee Batson of Randleman, N.C. Services will be held Thursday, at 1:30 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, with visitation prior, from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m., the church. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Section A. Hollingsworth Co. after 43 years of service, and was self-employed as an electrician. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. 3, 2003, at Easley Nursing Center after an extended illness. Mr. Porter was born in Pickens County. He was the son of the late George Mack Duffie "Mack" Porter and Lucinda Alexander Porter. Mr.

Porter was retired from Vulcan Materials in Liberty after 20 years of service. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, of the home; one brother, Lester Porter, of Easley; three sisters, Elma Jennings of Easley, and Frances Hatley and Ella Mae Trotter, both of Liberty; and a special little friend, Jasmine Rogers. Mr.

Porter was predeceased by a brother, Carl Porter; and a sister, Vera Tomberlin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8, at the funeral home.

A native of Greenville County, a daughter of the late Boyce Lee Harvey Sr.

and Lillian Lister Harvey, she was a retired employee of State Auto Insurance Co. and was a member of Abner Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Linda Smith, of Lyman; a brother, Boyce Lee Harvey of Greer; and a sister, Betty Lou H. Vaden, of Greer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.

Thursday, at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Frank Keels and the Rev. Donel Kelly. Burial will follow at Wood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 tonight, at The Wood Mortuary.

Bobby Lee Suttles, Anderson Robert Lee Philip Suttles, 63, of 110 Burns Bridge Circle, died Feb. 4, 2003. Survivors: Wife, Fredda Jean Duncan Suttles; sons, Marcus and Joseph Suttles; sisters, Ann Hunnicutt and Dolly Suttles; and two grandchildren.

Predeceased: Parents, Robert B. and Geneva Coxie Suttles. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at McDougald Funeral Home. Service: 3 p.m.

Friday, at the funeral chapel. Burial: South Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family: 3101 Dobbins Bridge Road, Anderson. Anne Fishburne Taber, Greenville Anne Fishburne Taber was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Walterboro.

Pepper Her mother was Caroline Patton Fishburne from Henderson County, N.C. Her father, William Fishburne, of Walterboro, was a soldier in the Confederate Army, making her one of the late true Daughters of the Confederacy. After her father's death, when she was just years of age, her family returned to mother's homestead in Naples, N.C. The homestead her, was a land grant from the King of England before the American Revolution. She took great pride in this heritage.

Anne was strong-willed and full of spirit. She claimed to be older than she was in order to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war she earned a bachelor's degree in Biology from University of Miami on the GI Bill. Anne married W.R.

"Bill" Taber Jr. (married 46 years), and together they had seven children. With determination she managed to make sure all seven children earned college degrees. She had strong family values and protected her children and seven grandchildren with loyal devotion. She made the world a more beautiful place with her love of working outside, and ability of making everything she touched grow.

She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She is now at peace with God in Heaven. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home. Clayton E. Wilson, Seneca Clayton Elgy Wilson, 84, of 1170 Return Church Road, died Feb.

3, 2003, at Oconee Memorial Hospital. Survivors: Wife, Ovaleen King Wilson; a granddaughter, Sennah Honea; a great grandson, Matthew Honea; and sisters, Edith Lee and Dot Grogan. Predeceased: A daughter, Janis Wilson Cole; and parents, William Jasper and Fannie Mae Lowe Wilson. Service: 2 p.m. today, at Return Baptist Church.
