Lent was obtained in a recent trade with Reading, ECHL then loaned to Springfield of the American Hockey League. He was expected to return for tonight's game, but Springfield has asked to keep Lent at least through Wednesday. "I really feelgood about the players we have here," Marks said. "I feel good about their attitude.

The guys really get along pretty well, despite the situation. I guess our next step is to become the spoilers of the Eastern Division. We're trying to maintain a positive attitude in here with positive comments and good work ethic. That's why I feel good, because the guys are responding." That doesn't mean Marks expects to have a turnaround overnight or to make a run at the playoffs. The possibly of winning half of the remaining games is a goal, however.

"We're competing with the best," Marks said. "I think that's important for us. If we were getting blown out by six and seven goals each night, it would be a different story. But we're competing every night, and that's all I can ask." Note: Troy Ilijow will miss at least a week after injuring a knee injury at Gwinnett. Assistant coach John Tor-chetti will coach the team the rest of the season. Dudley timed the move so he could attend this week's meetings of NHL general managers in Las Vegas. Tor-chetti will make his debut as an NHL head coach Tuesday at home against Montreal. Torchetti becomes the Panthers' third coach this season and their fifth since 2000. He most likely will return next season if the team plays well in its final 27 games, Dudley said.

"John has a chance to be very special as a coach," Dudley said from Las Vegas. This is his opportunity." At 38, Torchetti becomes the league's third-youngest coach. Tolley wins weekend 0 i Weinrich, 37, has 67 career goals and 294 assists in 1 ,056 games. He is expected to join the Blues when they host Colorado Thursday. The Blues have lost two of their to top three defensemen for the season with injuries to Al Maclnnis and Barret Jackman.

After a strong start, the Blues have won just six of their last 25 games and are struggling to earn their 25th consecutive playoff berth. Weinrich was made expendable with a glut of defensemen in Philadelphia, including the injured Jim Van-dermeer, Dennis Seidenberg and Eric Desjardins. The Flyers have added Mattias TV mander and Danny Markov in trades during the last month. Lightning TAMPA, Fla. General manager Jay Feaster and coach John Tortorel-la agreed to multiyear contract extensions with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Southeast Division-leading Lightning also reached agreements on multiyear extensions with associate coaches Craig Ramsey, Jeff Reese and Nigel Kirwan. Strength and conditioning coach Eric Lawson received a one-year contract. "Our intentions to extend the contracts of Jay, John and the entire staff has certainly not been a secret," Lightning president Ron Campbell said. "The Lightning are fortunate to have a collection of individuals working on the same page every day for the short- and long-term good of the entire organization." Tampa Bay won its first division title last season. The Lightning, in just their second postseason appearance, beat Washington in the opening round before losing to New Jersey in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Smith III Clemson Bureau wsmith greenvillenews.com The 2003-04 ECHL season hasn't gone well for Greenville Grrrowl coach John Marks. But Marks said he's excited about sending his Grrrowl team out for the rest of the season. The Grrrowl have the league's worst record at 7-34-4, but Marks likes the team's makeup.

Following numerous trades in an attempt to improve the team and build chemistry, he believes the right roster is in place. "I'm excited," Marks said after Monday's practice. "I really am. I think we're headed in the right direction." Several newcomers and the improved health of several other players spark Marks' optimism. Although Greenville dropped a 4-1 decision Saturday to Gwinnett in its first home game in three weeks, Mark's is hopeful of a better showing tonight at the Bi-Lo Center against the Columbia Inferno.
